SOFTENING POINT METTLER SOFTENING POINT METHOD: ASTM D3104
TEST SUMMARY
This test method is applicable to the pitches with softening points in the range 50 to 180° C. This test method and Test Method ASTM D2319 give comparable results.
Pitch is suspended in a cylindrical cup with a 6.35 mm hole in the bottom. As the sample is heated in air at a linear rate, the pitch flows downward a distance of 19 mm to interrupt a light beam. This is considered as the softening point in this test.

Repeatability: 0.5° C
Reproducibility: 1.5° C
This test method has no bias.
