ASTM D117 guide for sampling, test method and specification for insulating oil
ASTM D117 standard guide for sampling, test methods and specifications for electrical insulating oils of petroleum origin
SPECIFICATIONS
37. Mineral Insulating Oil for Electrical Apparatus
37.1 Scope:
37.1.1 Specification D3487 - The physical, chemical, and electrical properties of two types of new mineral insulating oil of petroleum origin for use as an insulating and cooling medium in new and existing power and distribution electrical apparatus, such as transformers, regulators, reactors, circuit breakers, switchgear, and attendant equipment are given in this specification.

37.1.2 Type I oil has a maximum oxidation inhibitor content of 0.08 mass % and Type II oil a maximum of 0.3 mass %. Except for the inhibitor content and oxidation stability requirements, the two oils have similar performance properties.

37.1.3 Specification D3487 is intended to define a mineral insulating oil that is functionally interchangeable with existing oils, is compatible with existing apparatus and with appropriate field maintenance, and will satisfactorily maintain its functional characteristics in its application in electrical equipment.

This specification applies only to new insulating oil prior to introduction into apparatus.

38. High Fire-Point Electrical Insulating Oils
38.1 Scope:
38.1.1 Specification D5222 lists properties of a fresh unused high fire-point insulating oil of petroleum origin for use as a dielectric and cooling medium in new power and distribution electrical apparatus, such as transformers and switchgear. The users should contact the manufacturers of the equipment or oil if questions of recommended characteristics or maintenance procedures arise.

38.1.2 High fire-point insulating oil differs from conventional mineral insulating oil by possessing a fire-point of at least 300°C. This property is necessary in order to comply with certain application requirements of the National Electric Code (Article 450-23) or other agencies.
